Siri, el asistente virtual del sistema operativo iOS de Apple, permite al usuario hacer búsquedas, conseguir direcciones y recibir recomendaciones de lugares simplemente hablándole. A estas alturas aunque no tengamos un dispositivo de Apple, estamos acostumbrados a que Siri hable con voz femenina. Pero esto cambia en algunos lugares.

Aunque en siempre se puede cambiar el género, en países como el Reino Unido, Francia y Alemania, por defecto Siri tiene voz de hombre. Esto es porque estudios de mercado han mostrado que en algunas sociedades Siri adopta el papel de ayudante con todo y estereotipo de ser una tarea correspondiente a una mujer; en otras culturas Siri asume el estereotipo de un guía instructor masculino con un tono más autoritario.

«Y más vale que sigas mis recomendaciones de restaurantes de comida italiana.»

 

Un dato curioso: Siri es originalmente un nombre femenino noruego que significa «mujer hermosa que guía hacia la victoria». Dag Kittalaus, co-creador de la aplicación, había planeado bautizar así a su futura hija pero su esposa tuvo un hijo y el nombre no fue usado hasta que el asistente virtual vio la luz. Siri es un nombre fácil de escribir y pronunciar en cualquier idioma, y se usa también como las siglas para Speech Interpretation and Recognition Interface (Interfaz de Interpretación y Reconocimiento del Habla).

 

Por cierto, cuando Apple compró la aplicación, a Steve Jobs no le agradaba el nombre de Siri pero se quedó a falta de una mejor propuesta («HAL 9000» ya estaba tomado).

Siri, Apple’s iOS virtual assistant allows its user browse, get directions and find recommendations for places just by speaking to it. Whether or not we own an Apple device we are used to hear Siri speak in a female voice. As a matter of fact this changes in some places.

Siri’s gender and accent settings can always be changed but in some countries like the United Kingdom, France and Germany it has a default male voice. This is only because market studies show that in some cultures Siri plays the stereotypical female role of an assistant and in others it is more of an also stereotypical male guiding instructor with a more authoritative tone.

«And you better follow my recommendations for Italian restaurants.»

 

Fun fact: Siri is originally a Norwegian female name meaning «beautiful woman who leads you to victory». The application’s co-creator Dag Kittalaus had planned to name his future daughter Siri but instead had a son and the name was not used until it was time to launch the speech recognition technology. «Siri» is easy to spell and pronounce across languages and is also used as an acronym for Speech Interpretation and Recognition Interface.

 

By the way, when Apple bought the app Steve Jobs was not fond of the name Siri but it had to stay since there were not any better suggestions (HAL 9000 was already taken, anyway).
