Cómo identificar un ataque de phishing

Ah, phishing. Uno de los trucos más viejos en el libro de estafas por Internet. En un instante te contaremos cómo alguien quiso engañarnos dos veces esta se mana, pero antes:

Cómo funciona el phising

1. Recibes un correo electrónico de tu banco.

2. Te pide dar clic a un link para iniciar sesión en el (supuesto) sitio Web de tu banco.

3. Aparece una página de (supuestamente) tu banco, que te pide ingresar tu nombre de usuario y contraseña.

4. Ingresas tu nombre de usuario y contraseña y das clic en enviar.

5. Aparece un mensaje de error diciendo que ingresaste mal tus datos.

6. Intentas de nuevo. Mismo mensaje. Repites hasta que…

7. …te das cuenta de que fuiste engañado.

En 2013, a nivel mundial se registraron 450,000 ataques de phishing, con pérdidas de 5,900 millones de dólares.

Cómo detectar un ataque

El correo electrónico que recibimos fue este:

"¡Pero tiene el logo oficial del banco!"

Como ves, no es sencillo distinguir a primera vista entre un mensaje genuino y un intento de estafa. Este email tiene el diseño (logos, colores, tipo de letra y formato) que esperarías de tu banco. Incluso tiene una herramienta anti-intrusos y te invita a leer una guía de consejos prácticos de seguridad.

“Debe ser legítimo porque tiene el logo de Empresa Socialmente Responsable. Ese logo es difícil de conseguir, ¿cierto?”

Esta imagen sería 100% perfecta si no fuera por la falta ortográfica al final del mensaje:

Ese fue precisamente el detalle que delató la estafa: ¿El texto? No es seleccionable. ¿Los links? No son cliqueables. El correo electrónico entero es una imagen .JPG con un solo link hacia una página específica.

Recuerda: el objetivo de un phisher es hacer que visites una página específica para que entregues voluntariamente tus datos, así que insertar una imagen de 714 x 766 pixeles significa que hay 714 x 766 posibilidades de que un solo clic te lleve al supuesto inicio de sesión de tu banco.

Pero Gmail dice que el correo viene de mi banco

Cierto: una de las formas más sencillas de detectar un intento de estafa es identificar la dirección de correo electrónico que está enviándote e-mails. Pero en algunos casos, tu administrador de correo electrónico (Outlook, Gmail, Hotmail, Yahoo!, etc.) dirá que el remitente es una dirección legítima:

santander.com.mx es un dominio legítimo, por lo que avisos@santander.com.mx no es una dirección sospechosa. Lo que ni Gmail ni tú sospechan es que el phisher está usando varias técnicas para esconder su identidad. La primera es mandar un e-mail desde una dirección ajena.

Piensa en las hojas de contacto de algunos sitios Web donde ingresas tu nombre, mensaje y correo electrónico, y tu e-mail es enviado sin que hayas tenido que ingresar sesión.

En el campo de dirección de correo electrónico podrías haber escrito la dirección de tu vecino y tu e-mail habría sido enviado de cualquier forma. Algo similar es lo que hace nuestro phisher: simplemente ingresa una dirección legítima del banco y aparece en tu bandeja de entrada.

La clave está en identificar el link al que la imagen apunta:

Si el dominio del e-mail es santander.com.mx, no tiene sentido que la (supuesta) página de inicio de sesión esté bajo el dominio romaschools.com/, que pertenece a un internado en Kenia:

"¿Esto significa que el príncipe heredero de una fortuna africana ahora quiere ayudarme a resetear mi cuenta de banco?"

Esta es la segunda técnica con la que el phisher oculta su identidad: hackeó el sitio de la escuela y subió la falsa página de inicio de sesión del banco. Posiblemente Roma Schools Ltd ni si quiera se dio cuenta del hackeo. ¿Por qué? Porque el objetivo no es dañar a Roma Schools sino usarlo como vehículo para su ataque contra usuarios bancarios como tú.

Este diagrama puede ilustrar mejor la situación.

Como sabrás, hay listas negras de direcciones Web usadas para enviar spam y ataques fraudulentos como este. Por ello, los phishers buscan apoderarse silenciosamente de dominios legítimos y desde allí estafar a sus víctimas. Una vez que la amenaza es detectada y el dominio es agregado a la lista negra, el phisher solo tiene que encontrar un nuevo huésped.

Tarde o temprano te toparás con este tipo de mensajes en tu bandeja de entrada. Lo recomendable es eliminarlos y agregar el remitente a la lista de spam (si tu administrador de correo electrónico no lo ha hecho aún).

Ten en cuenta que no siempre dirán que vienen de parte de tu banco. Puedes recibir un mensaje supuesto de Facebook diciendo que alguien subió una foto tuya o que alguno de tus contactos te envió un mensaje a través un medio social que no usas. Lo importante para un phisher es conseguir tu contraseña para acceder a medios sociales o correo electrónico, porque seguramente es la misma que usas en otras plataformas.

En todo caso, si tienes duda sobre la seguridad de tu cuenta, consulta directamente a tu banco a través de su sitio oficial o vía telefónica.

Sus pruebas de verificación de identidad son más largas que las que Harry Potter tuvo que enfrentar para llegar a la piedra filosofal.

Crónicas de una visita a Google

Eran ya las 4:00 AM, hacía mucho frío y todos los estudiantes estábamos en el autobús. Todo estaba listo.
Casi.

El profesor que nos habían asignado como líder del grupo durante el paseo no llegaba. Los autobuses siempre dicen que todos deben llegar a cierta hora para evitar retrasos, pero ya se había pasado por media hora. Y cuando son las 4 de la mañana y estás esperando a comenzar un viaje de 10 horas, lo que menos quieres es esperar. Después de casi 45 minutos llegó el profesor, y por fin comenzamos el viaje.

Las siguientes 10 horas se vieron más o menos así. Tenía mucho sueño.

Al llegar a Mountain View, esa misma tarde, dejamos nuestras cosas en un hotel, y fuimos a visitar un centro comercial. En fin. Lo que aquí nos concierne es la visita a Google, así que adelantemos el tiempo a la mañana siguiente. Nos levantamos temprano, desayunamos rápido y a las 8 de la mañana ya nos encontrábamos en el famoso Googleplex.

Después de cientos de fotos grupales (y selfies por parte de algunos, claro), nos dispusimos a caminar hacia los edificios, y nos encontramos cosas interesantes.

Nos encontramos con el Ing. Ernesto Camacho (egresado de CETYS Universidad), quien trabaja para Google y se ofreció para ser nuestro anfitrión y darnos un mini-tour.

Otro compañero le iba a ayudar, para que cada quien llevara a una mitad del grupo y que fuera un paseo más cómodo; sin embargo, por algún motivo no pudo llegar, y nuestro grupo se tuvo que dividir en 3 grupos de 15 personas cada uno. Entonces, 15 personas daban el paseo de 1 hora aprox., mientras los demás simplemente esperaban su turno.

Durante el paseo, nos topamos con una escultura digna de admiración. ¿Qué significa? No estoy seguro. Podría ser una compleja metáfora sobre el internet, sobre los motores de búsqueda, o sobre la vida misma.

O tal vez simplemente es un esqueleto de un tiranosaurio rex que murió por una infestación de flamingos de plástico.

También tuvimos la oportunidad de usar el Google Earth que todos conocemos, pero en una versión mucho más inmersiva.

Y con semejante tecnología, podíamos ir a cualquier lugar, literalmente. El mundo estaba en nuestras manos.

Nos mostraron las instalaciones, incluido un cuarto en el que tienen una mesa de billar, televisiones y una resbaladilla para bajar del 2do al 1er piso. Al final nos dejaron comprar en su tienda de souvenirs (en la que, por cierto, no se acepta dinero en efectivo, solo tarjetas de crédito/débito y otros medios electrónicos).

Casi nos íbamos, cuando encontramos a otro egresado de CETYS que también trabaja ahí. Ambos nos estuvieron platicando sus experiencias y nos dieron consejos. Nos despedimos, para dirigirnos a la salida. Al parecer era la hora del almuerzo, porque todas las mesas estaban llenas, e incluso habían unos cuantos empleados jugando volleyball en una cancha de arena que tienen instalada.

Debo confesar que siempre he admirado a Google como empresa, y este paseo solo sirvió para confirmar esta admiración. Su filosofía es que, si sus empleados están cómodos y alegres, la productividad aumentará naturalmente. Este método de trabajo ni siquiera es un secreto. No se necesita ser un experto para darnos cuenta de que actualmente Google es de las compañías más exitosas e innovadoras a nivel internacional, así que algo deben estar haciendo bien.

Después de la visita a Google pasamos a la Universidad de Stanford a tomar fotos, y después fuimos a San Francisco (a tomar más fotos), pero esas no las pondré aquí porque son muchas. Si te interesa verlas, puedes visitar mi cuenta de Flickr.

It was 4:00 a.m., it was cold and every student was already on the bus. Everything was ready.
Well, almost.

The teacher we had been assigned as group leader during the trip wouldn’t come. The bus companies always say that you have to be there at a certain hour to avoid delays, but this teacher was already 30 minutes late. And when it’s 4 in the morning and you’re waiting to start a 10-hour bus trip, the last thing you want to do is wait. After almost 45 minutes, the teacher arrived and the trip finally begun.

The next 10 hours looked sort of like this. I was very tired.

When we got to Mountain View, that same evening, we left our belongings at a hotel, and went to a mall. Anyway. What concerns us here is the visit to Google, so let’s fast-forward to the next morning. We got up early, ate breakfast quickly and at 8 a.m. we were already at the famous Googleplex.

After hundreds of group photos (and some selfies, why not), we walked towards the buildings, and found interesting things.

Another colleague was going to help him, so that each person would take one half of the group to be more comfortable, but for some reason he couldn’t come, and our group had to be divided into 3 groups of 15 people each. That way, 15 people took the tour for about 1 hour, while the rest simply waited for their turn.

During the trip, we came across a thought-provoking sculpture, worthy of admiration. What does it mean? I’m not sure. It could be a complex metaphor about the Internet, about search engines, or about life itself.

Or maybe it’s just the skeleton of a T-Rex that was killed by a horde of killer plastic flamingos.

We also had the opportunity to use the popular Google Earth software, but in a much more immersive way.

And with such technology, we could literally go to any place in Earth. The world was at our hands.

We were shown the facilities, including a room with a pool table, TVs and a slide that goes from the 2nd to the 1st floor. At the end, they let us buy souvenirs in their store (in which, by the way, they don’t accept cash as payment; only credit/debit cards and other electronic methods).

We were on our way out when we came across another CETYS graduate, who also works there. Both of them told us about their jobs and experiences and gave us advice. After that, we said goodbye and headed for the exit. Apparently it was lunch time, because almost every table was full, and there were even some employees playing volleyball on a sand court they have installed at the center of the plaza.

I must confess that I’ve always admired Google as a company, and this trip served only to confirm this admiration. Their philosophy is that if your employees are comfortable and happy, productivity will increase naturally. And this method is not even a secret. It doesn’t take an expert to realize that Google is currently one of the most innovative and successful companies in the world, so they have to be doing something well.

After we visited Google, we headed to Stanford University to take some more pictures, and then we went to San Francisco (you guessed it: to take even more photos), but I’m not going to put those here because they’re a lot. If you’re interested, however, you can visit my Flickr profile.

5 relojes inteligentes que debes conocer

¿Alguien dijo teléfonos inteligentes ? Por favor, eso es ya del pasado. Ahora todos los reflectores apuntan hacia la siguiente estrella: los relojes inteligentes.

En su momento tener un reloj digital integrado con calculadora era un gran avance tecnológico. El avance de esta generación implica tener un reloj que además de dar la hora, también permita hacer llamadas telefónicas.

Es importante mencionar que no es un proyecto reciente, los creadores de los relojes inteligentes han estado trabajando en ellos desde hace años. Entonces, ¿por qué están teniendo su momento apenas ahora? Porque grandes empresas como Samsung y Apple, escucharon acerca de los proyectos que pequeñas empresas estaban desarrollando en esta área y no se podían quedar atrás. Finalmente, en la primera semana de septiembre de 2013, una de las noticias tecnológicas más sonadas (otra fue el lanzamiento del iPhone 5s y 5c), fue la presentación del reloj inteligente de Samsung: el Galaxy Gear, que saldrá al mercado a finales de septiembre con un precio inicial de 300 dólares.

Con o sin reloj este mensaje va para Apple.

Pero antes de este, ya existían muchos modelos de relojes inteligentes que llegaron a acaparar el mercado. Para conocer el avance y la innovación que se ha tenido en este ámbito, te presentaremos 5 diferentes modelos que han salido al mercado:

The Pebble Smart Watch

Conocido como el antecesor de los relojes inteligentes (aunque hay empresas que le quieren quitar el título). Este fue el primer reloj que englobaba un hardware y software de calidad. Gracias a ello, el Pebble Smart Watch da la opción de conectarte a tu iPhone o Android mediante Bluetooth y así contestar tus llamadas o mensajes de texto.

Los creadores de este reloj no se quedaron conformes con el sólo hecho de crear una reloj inteligente, le dieron seguimiento creando su propio cargador. Pero no es cualquier cargador, como se puede observar en la siguiente imagen, el cargador está formado por un imán que sostiene al reloj mientras se está cargando.

Omate True Smart

Este reloj inteligente es mucho más avanzado que el Pebble Smart Watch. El Omate True Smart es un teléfono con el diseño físico de un reloj, pantalla táctil y todas tus aplicaciones, como Instagram, Twitter, Linkedin, etc. Es importante mencionar que los creadores de este reloj crearon un convenio con Google y también puedes gozar de todos sus servicios como: Gmail, Google Music, Google Maps, etc.

Buscando innovar el producto los desarrolladores agregaron una plataforma 3D que permite que el reloj funcione sin la necesidad de estar cerca del teléfono.

¿Mencionamos que además es resistente al agua?

ZeNano

Es el primer reloj inteligente lanzado por la compañía suiza MyKronoz. Dicho reloj ofrece las tareas y servicios más básicos conectándose al teléfono inteligente mediante Bluetooth. Otro servicio que ofrece es la frecuencia FM de radio y controlar la reproducción de música.

Qualcomm Toq

Qualcomm no se quiso quedar atrás y también presentó su reloj inteligente, delimitando su mercado a Estados Unidos con un producto exclusivo de edición limitada.
Este reloj también se conecta al smartphone para contestar llamadas, con una mayor calidad en su pantalla. Este reloj usa tecnología de tinta electrónica de colores llamada Marisol que te permite ver la pantalla claramente a la luz del día y en la noche.

Samsung Galaxy Gear

Volvemos al reloj inteligente que es la novedad de Samsung. Este dispositivo ofrecerá una gran gama de aplicaciones que podrás utilizar como si fuera uno de los teléfonos de la empresa surcoreana. Una de sus características principales: la correa del reloj está llena de tecnología ya que está integrada por la cámara y el micrófono.

Pequeños detalles como el hecho de que puedes colgar una llamada con sólo poner tu mano sobre la pantalla de tu reloj o que la batería dura un día entero, vuelven más atractivo a este smartwatch. Samsung cree tanto en su producto y el éxito que tendrá que ya comenzaron a trabajar en el Galaxy Gear 2.

Con tantas empresas grandes y pequeñas, conocidas y nuevas, compitiendo por ofrecer el mejor reloj inteligente, ¿qué le deparará a esta industria? ¿Será el siguiente gadget indispensable o se convertirá en otra tecnología cíclica como el cine 3D? La aparente ausencia de Apple, ¿será un indicador?

Será cuestión de tiempo.

Did someone say smartphones? Please, that’s already in the past. Now all the reflectors point to the next star: smart watches.

In the past, to have a built-in digital clock with a calculator was a technological breakthrough. The progress of this generation means having a clock that besides telling time, also allows you to make phone calls.

It is important to mention that is not a recent project, the creators of smart watches have been working on them for years. So why are they taking their time just now? Because big companies like Samsung and Apple, heard that small business had projects being developed in this area and could not be left behind. Finally, in the first week of September 2013, one of the most talked about technology news (another was the launch of iPhone 5s and 5c), was the presentation of smart watch from Samsung: the Galaxy Gear, which will be released in late September with a starting price of $ 300.

With or without the watch, this is a message to Apple.

But before this, there were already many models of smart watches that came to corner the market. For the advancement and innovation that has been in this area, we present five different models that have been released:

The Pebble Smart Watch

Known as the predecessor of smart watches (although there are companies that want to take the title). This was the first watch that included hardware and software quality. Thanks to this, the Pebble Smart Watch gives the option to connect to your iPhone or Android via Bluetooth and so you can answer your calls or text messages.

The creators of this clock were satisfied with the mere fact of creating a smart watch, but they decided to innovate it by creating its own charger. But not just any charger, as seen in the following image, the charger is formed by a magnet that holds the clock while it’s charging.

True Omate Smart

This smart watch is much more advanced than Smart Pebble Watch. The True Omate Smart is a phone with the physical design of a watch, touch screen and all your apps, like Instagram, Twitter, Linkedin, etc.. It is noteworthy that the creators of this watch created an agreement with Google and you can enjoy all their services like Gmail, Google Music, Google Maps, etc…

Looking for developers to innovate the product added a 3D platform that allows the watch to run without the need to be near the phone.

Did we mention, is water proof?

ZeNano

It is the first smart watch launched by the Swiss company MyKronoz. This watch offers the most basic tasks and services connecting to your smartphone via Bluetooth. Another service offered is the radio FM frequency and control playback of music.

Qualcomm Toq

Qualcomm did not want to be left behind and also introduced its smart watch, limiting their market to the U.S. with an exclusive limited edition.
This watch also connects to your smartphone to answer calls, with higher quality on your screen. This watch uses e-ink technology called Marisol the colors allows you to see the screen clearly in daylight and at night.

Samsung Galaxy Gear

We return to the smart watch that is new to Samsung. This device will offer a wide range of applications that you can use as if it were one of the phones from the South Korean company. One of its main features: the watch strap is full of technology as it is integrated by the camera and microphone.

Small details like the fact that you can hang up a call by simply putting your hand on the screen of your clock or the battery lasts a whole day, made this smartwatch more atracttive. Samsung believes both in their product and the success already has so they started working on the Galaxy Gear 2.

With so many companies large and small, old and new, competing to offer the best smart watch, what holds for this industry? Will the following essential gadget or other technology will become cyclical as 3D movies? The apparent absence of Apple, is it an indicator?

It will be a matter of time.

Los geeks también aman

Ser geek generalmente significa hacer muchas cosas de forma diferente. Muchas otras veces significa precisamente reconstruir hasta el último detalle posible aquellas obras que alimentan nuestra imaginación y mueven nuestras emociones.

Dicen que la imitación es el mejor elogio, así que hoy reconocemos a todos aquellos que han ondeado la bandera geek hasta las últimas consecuencias: el matrimonio.

1. Entrenador Pokémon

Hay dos cosas que debemos que entender sobre los geeks: la primera es su gran perseverancia (y mucho tiempo libre) para ensayar una coreografía de casi 5 minutos; la segunda es que cualquier lugar en cualquier momento puede convertirse en un escenario perfecto para sacar a relucir a su verdadero ‘yo’.

…Mucho tiempo libre.

En este caso, aunque nuestro galán no tuvo problema para encontrar y convencer a unas 30 personas disfrazadas para que hicieran un flash mob, se nota que tuvo que dedicar mucho tiempo y dedicación para coordinar su propuesta matrimonial. Nuestra parte favorita es cuando Boba Fett pierde su arma, casco y dignidad queriendo hacer break dance.

Este final es más digno que el que George Lucas decidió dar a nuestro mandaloriano favorito.

La única forma de superar esta caída es con un anillo de bodas dentro de una ‘caja’ original.

2. Mario en el mundo de la novia

El siguiente enamorado también le dedicó mucho tiempo a su propuesta, pero lo más importante es que pensó en el tema que más le gustaría a su novia y fue consistente con él. Le aplaudimos el detalle de la caja flotante y el tapizado de Mario Bros. de toda la sala.

Nuestro novio geek debió haber investigado perviamente en Wikipedia qué se hace con el anillo una vez que ella ha dado el ‘Sí’.

Frodo tampoco sabía qué rayos hacer con su anillo.

TIP: Si tu novia está sellando el momento más feliz de su vida con un abrazo, no la ignores esperando a que salgan los fuegos artificiales en la pared.

“Pasé toda la noche ensayando esto así que no te distraigas.”

3. WWWedding

En el tercer lugar tenemos a una propuesta de matrimonio un poco más elaborada y más a nuestro estilo. Nuestro geek compró su propio dominio web y desarrolló un sitio para proponerle matrimonio a su novia. En http://www.willyoumarrymekc.com/ cualquier visitante podía leer su propuesta, firmar el libro digital de invitados y correr la voz hasta que el link llegara a su amada.

4. La novia en el mundo de Mario

El plomero italiano vuelve a aparecer en una propuesta de matrimonio. Esta vez la enamorada es quien entra al mundo de Mario sin sospechar que su futuro esposo había editado el código del juego para que el mensaje apareciera escrito. ¿Qué tal el elemento de sorpresa aquí? Ella nunca imaginará ver en la pantalla de su televisor su propuesta de matrimonio escrito con monedas.

Así como estas, existen miles de propuestas de matrimonio geeks que puedes encontrar en Internet. Ojalá esto sirva de inspiración a más de un@.

No hay nada más romántico y que recibir una pokebola que diga: “¡Yo te elijo!”. A todas las mujeres: ¿Qué prefieren, una propuesta de matrimonio en un restaurante o que su novio recree el mundo de su video juego favorito en la sala de su casa?

Qué busca la generación Y en el ambiente laboral

La personalidad de cada persona se define por sucesos que ocurrieron en los primeros años de su vida. El impacto de acontecimientos históricos puede afectar el actuar de generaciones enteras. El segundo cuarto del siglo XX trajo a la generación silenciosa; le siguió la de los baby boomers post guerra mundial; luego vino la generación X y después la generación Y.

La generación Y será la más educada hasta en la historia, y la han definido por eventos como los ataques del 11 de septiembre de 2001 en Nueva York, la Guerra en Irak y los desastres naturales como los tsunamis del Mar Índico en 2004 y de Japón en 2011, o el terremoto de Haití en 2010. You may think, why do I have to make my company attractive so they want to come to work with me? For the small and simple fact that young people who make up the Millennial generation, are the future leaders of the world.

Pros y contras de tener como socio a tu pareja

En el mundo empresarial existen innumerables mitos y leyendas acerca de cómo debes desempeñarte, qué situaciones debes evitar, que acciones debes tomar y en ciertas ocasiones, hasta qué palabras no debes usar. El papel que juegan las IPs en la seguridad web

Recientemente hablamos de los virus que pueden afectar a una Mac. Hoy hablaremos sobre una forma de evitar amenazas que pueden afectar a cualquier tipo de sistema operativo (lo decimos por experiencia propia): bloquear direcciones IP.

¿Qué son las direcciones IP?

Así como una persona tiene un domicilio para su hogar y otro para su oficina, cada dispositivo conectado a una red de Internet tiene su propia dirección de IP (Internet Protocol) o Protocolo de Internet.

Todas las IPs (como se les conoce coloquialmente) están formadas por una serie única e irrepetible de números.

Muchos hackers hacen que al visitar una dirección IP (por ejemplo, un sitio web), automáticamente se descargue a tu computadora un plug-in que obtiene acceso a toda tu información, incluyendo tu dirección IP. Tal como si se tratara de un ataque zombie, tu dispositivo queda infectado y, por lo tanto, la dirección IP se une al arsenal de IPs del cibercriminal. Esta acción es repetida con miles de sitios web, creando un gran repertorio de direcciones IP desde dónde atacar a nuevas víctimas.

¿Cómo sucede el ataque? Todo servidor tiene un nombre de usuario y una contraseña de acceso. Aquí es donde muchas personas cometen el error más grande, dejando como el nombre del usuario “Admin” y contraseñas débiles como 111111111 o admin1234. Esto hace que tu equipo se vuelva en Disneyland para los hackers.
