5 relojes inteligentes que debes conocer

¿Alguien dijo teléfonos inteligentes ? Por favor, eso es ya del pasado. Ahora todos los reflectores apuntan hacia la siguiente estrella: los relojes inteligentes.

En su momento tener un reloj digital integrado con calculadora era un gran avance tecnológico. El avance de esta generación implica tener un reloj que además de dar la hora, también permita hacer llamadas telefónicas.

Es importante mencionar que no es un proyecto reciente, los creadores de los relojes inteligentes han estado trabajando en ellos desde hace años. Entonces, ¿por qué están teniendo su momento apenas ahora? Porque grandes empresas como Samsung y Apple, escucharon acerca de los proyectos que pequeñas empresas estaban desarrollando en esta área y no se podían quedar atrás. Finalmente, en la primera semana de septiembre de 2013, una de las noticias tecnológicas más sonadas (otra fue el lanzamiento del iPhone 5s y 5c), fue la presentación del reloj inteligente de Samsung: el Galaxy Gear, que saldrá al mercado a finales de septiembre con un precio inicial de 300 dólares.

Con o sin reloj este mensaje va para Apple.

Pero antes de este, ya existían muchos modelos de relojes inteligentes que llegaron a acaparar el mercado. Para conocer el avance y la innovación que se ha tenido en este ámbito, te presentaremos 5 diferentes modelos que han salido al mercado:

The Pebble Smart Watch

Conocido como el antecesor de los relojes inteligentes (aunque hay empresas que le quieren quitar el título). Este fue el primer reloj que englobaba un hardware y software de calidad. Gracias a ello, el Pebble Smart Watch da la opción de conectarte a tu iPhone o Android mediante Bluetooth y así contestar tus llamadas o mensajes de texto.

Los creadores de este reloj no se quedaron conformes con el sólo hecho de crear una reloj inteligente, le dieron seguimiento creando su propio cargador. Pero no es cualquier cargador, como se puede observar en la siguiente imagen, el cargador está formado por un imán que sostiene al reloj mientras se está cargando.

Omate True Smart

Este reloj inteligente es mucho más avanzado que el Pebble Smart Watch. El Omate True Smart es un teléfono con el diseño físico de un reloj, pantalla táctil y todas tus aplicaciones, como Instagram, Twitter, Linkedin, etc. Es importante mencionar que los creadores de este reloj crearon un convenio con Google y también puedes gozar de todos sus servicios como: Gmail, Google Music, Google Maps, etc.

Buscando innovar el producto los desarrolladores agregaron una plataforma 3D que permite que el reloj funcione sin la necesidad de estar cerca del teléfono.

ZeNano

Es el primer reloj inteligente lanzado por la compañía suiza MyKronoz. Dicho reloj ofrece las tareas y servicios más básicos conectándose al teléfono inteligente mediante Bluetooth. Otro servicio que ofrece es la frecuencia FM de radio y controlar la reproducción de música.

Qualcomm Toq

Qualcomm no se quiso quedar atrás y también presentó su reloj inteligente, delimitando su mercado a Estados Unidos con un producto exclusivo de edición limitada.
Este reloj también se conecta al smartphone para contestar llamadas, con una mayor calidad en su pantalla. Este reloj usa tecnología de tinta electrónica de colores llamada Marisol que te permite ver la pantalla claramente a la luz del día y en la noche.

Samsung Galaxy Gear

Volvemos al reloj inteligente que es la novedad de Samsung. Este dispositivo ofrecerá una gran gama de aplicaciones que podrás utilizar como si fuera uno de los teléfonos de la empresa surcoreana. Una de sus características principales: la correa del reloj está llena de tecnología ya que está integrada por la cámara y el micrófono.

Pequeños detalles como el hecho de que puedes colgar una llamada con sólo poner tu mano sobre la pantalla de tu reloj o que la batería dura un día entero, vuelven más atractivo a este smartwatch. Samsung cree tanto en su producto y el éxito que tendrá que ya comenzaron a trabajar en el Galaxy Gear 2.

Con tantas empresas grandes y pequeñas, conocidas y nuevas, compitiendo por ofrecer el mejor reloj inteligente, ¿qué le deparará a esta industria? ¿Será el siguiente gadget indispensable o se convertirá en otra tecnología cíclica como el cine 3D? La aparente ausencia de Apple, ¿será un indicador?

5 tips para usar hashtags

Los hashtags hoy están en la mayoría de los servicios de redes sociales. En estos medios, permiten el acceso a publicaciones sobre temas específicos mediante palabras clave etiquetadas con el símbolo # (hashtag en inglés).

Esta herramienta se popularizó en 2007 a través de Twitter y hoy es parte fundamental de la comunicación en Internet, así que conviene escuchar un par de recomendaciones sobre su uso:

1. #Usa la menor cantidad de palabras posible. No uses hashtags formados por más de tres palabras, será difícil leerlos y, en casos como el de Twitter, donde solo tienes 140 caracteres para escribir, gastarás espacio.
2. #Procura ser específico. De ser posible, agrega tema, lugar o año, por ejemplo, #ConvencionDePayasos13.
3. #Investiga antes de enviar. Usar hashtags populares puede ser una forma de atraer seguidores a tus publicaciones, pero asegúrate de que sean relevantes a lo que dices. Por otro lado, pensar cómo se leerá el mensaje nos evitará casos lamentables como estos 4:

#therapist. Usado para etiquetar publicaciones sobre terapeutas, en inglés se lee como ‘therapist’.

#susanalbumparty. #SusanAlbumParty es como debió haberse escrito este hashtag para promover el nuevo álbum de SusanBoyle.
#hobbitch. El Hobbit era la película; CH, el código de Suiza (como MX lo es de México); juntos, un caso lamentable.

4. #No Abuses. Llenar de hashtags la descripción de una foto es como subrayar con marcador fluorescente cada renglón de un libro de texto: Pierde el sentido y simplemente está mal.
5. #Usa Mayúsculas. Esto ayudará a la lectura de cada palabra.

Qué busca la generación Y en el ambiente laboral

La personalidad de cada persona se define por sucesos que ocurrieron en los primeros años de su vida. El impacto de acontecimientos históricos puede afectar el actuar de generaciones enteras. El segundo cuarto del siglo XX trajo a la generación silenciosa; le siguió la de los baby boomers post guerra mundial; luego vino la generación X y después la generación Y.

La generación Y será la más educada hasta en la historia, y la han definido por eventos como los ataques del 11 de septiembre de 2001 en Nueva York, la Guerra en Irak y los desastres naturales como los tsunamis del Mar Índico en 2004 y de Japón en 2011, o el terremoto de Haití en 2010. Nacidos entre los años de 1980 y 2000, son conocidos mundialmente como Millennials.

Una generación que por un lado tiene a jóvenes que han sobresalido desde temprana edad, siendo líderes en grupos sociales, buscando una entrada al mundo laboral desde su etapa universitaria y una vez que se han graduado mantienen su puesto o se convierten en emprendedores. Por otro lado tiene a los jóvenes que por diversas razones no han logrado independizarse de sus padres, siguen viviendo en casa y alargan sus estudios para no trabajar.

11. They want managers that are constantly teaching them. They want managers that are examples of life for them, help them overcome challenges, are organized, flexible and keep them motivated to move foward.

You may think, why do I have to make my company attractive so they want to come to work with me? For the small and simple fact that young people who make up the Millennial generation, are the future leaders of the world.

8 tecnologías que ayudan a personas discapacitadas

La noticia del plan para lanzar al mercado a finales de 2013 el primer smartphone para invidentes nos emocionó, como lo hace todo tipo de avances tecnológicos en favor de la humanidad. Así que hicimos una recopilación de otros gadgets y apps para personas con discapacidades. Algunos son aún prototipos pero nos dan una clara idea de lo que podremos hacer en el futuro.

1. Automóvil para invidentes

Al Pacino nos enseñó en Perfume de Mujer (1992) que no es una buena idea malabarear con granadas ni dejar que un psicótico ciego maneje un Ferrari.

Pero para el resto de los invidentes, el Laboratorio de Robótica y Mecanismos de la universidad Virginia Tech ha desarrollado un sistema de guantes y un respaldo que emiten vibraciones para alertar al conductor sobre obstáculos en su camino y cómo evitarlos. Algo así como Luke Skywalker entrenando en el Halcón Milenario.

2. Hand Talk, traductor a lenguaje de señas

Esta app diseñada para iOS, Android y BlackBerry por un equipo de desarrolladores brasileños, traduce texto, imágenes y audio inicialmente al Lenguaje de Señas Brasileño (LIBRAS). Actualmente hay planes de añadir más lenguajes para personas con impedimento auditivo. La traducción es una serie de señas interpretadas por Hugo, un personaje animado que aparece en la pantalla. ¿La razón de esta app? Para muchos sordomudos brasileños es más fácil interpretar LIBRAS, su lenguaje principal, que leer portugués. Puedes ver el video aquí.

3. Sensor para que personas con poca movilidad controlen una tableta
Access4Kids, es un sensor puede ser usado en el brazo o colocado sobre una silla de ruedas y permite a las personas con parálisis cerebral, espina bífida o distrofia muscular controlar de manera inalámbrica una tableta. Tres resistores sensitivos a la fuerza miden la presión y la convierten en instrucciones para la tableta. Este video explica más sobre el proyecto.

4. Automóvil para personas en silla de ruedas

Piensa en un Smart con una rampa de acceso integrada. El Kenguru es un vehículo para una persona, que con un control remoto abre la ‘cajuela’ mientras una rampa desciende para que el conductor pueda entrar con todo y su silla de ruedas. Este automóvil es operado con manivelas similares a las de una motocicleta para acelerar y girar. El Kenguru cuesta $25,000 dólares y está pensado como una alternativa a los gastos de adaptar un vehículo común para el uso de discapacitados.

5. Silla de ruedas que permite ‘ver’ a invidentes
Esta silla de ruedas robótica cuenta con un láser y un sensor que genera un mapa en tercera dimensión de su alrededor. Ese mapa le permite a la silla navegar a través de obstáculos, como el tránsito de personas en un corredor.

6. Silla de ruedas ‘trepadora’
Siguiendo con otra silla de ruedas robótica, ésta además cuenta con patas que se mueven para subir escalones, sortear obstáculos y pasar por terrenos irregulares. Todo esto lo hace manteniendo el equilibrio del usuario usando estabilizadores. Es como si tomáramos un robot explorador de Marte y lo convirtiéramos en una silla de ruedas. Este video da una demostración de lo que puede hacer la silla.

7. Retenedor para operar equipo con la lengua
Georgia Tech ha desarrollado un retenedor con sensores magnéticos que le permite a un individuo hacer movimientos con la lengua que se traducen en instrucciones tipo palanca de mando a una aplicación para controlar maquinaria. Esto abre posibilidades de trabajo a personas con fuertes lesiones en la columna vertebral.

8. Elevadores con reconocimiento de voz
Una interfaz de Mitsubishi en Japón le permite a usuarios invidentes o con dificultad para alcanzar los botones de un elevador, darle instrucciones orales para llegar al piso deseado. El sistema, que se activa cuando detecta una silla de ruedas, además avisa a los pasajeros cuando llegan a su destino.

News to launch the first smartphone for visually impaired people has excited us so much we set to make a compilation of other gadgets and apps that help handicapped people. Some of them are still prototypes but nevertheless they give us a clear idea of what’s to come.

1. Car for the visually impaired

Al Pacino taught us in Scent of a Woman (1992) that juggling live grenades is as much a good idea as letting a blind psycho test drive a Ferrari.

But for decent blind people, the Robotics and Mechanisms Lab at Virginia Tech has developed a system of gloves and seat cover that vibrate to alert the driver about obstacles in their way. Something like Luke Skywalker’s training inside the Millennium Falcon.

2. Hand Talk, sign language translator

This app was designed for iOS, Android and BlackBerry by a team of Brazilian developers. It translates text, images and audio to Brazilian Sign Language (LIBRAS). There are currently plans to add other sign languages. These signs are shown by Hugo, an animated character that appears on the screen. You can watch the video here.

3. Tablet sensor for people with limited mobility
Access4Kids is a sensor that can be worn on the arm or placed on the wheelchair of people with brain paralysis, spina bifida or muscular dystrophy so they can control a tablet. Three force-sensitive resistors measure the pressure and turn it to instructions for the tablet. This video explains more about the project.

4. Car for drivers in wheelchair

Picture a Smart with an integrated access ramp. The Kenguru is a one-person vehicle with a remote-controlled hatch that opens as a special ramp descends to allow access to the driver AND wheelchair. This car is operated with handles similar to those of motorcycles to steer and accelerate. The $25,000 Kenguru is an alternative to the costs of retrofitting a regular vehicle.

5. Wheelchair that lets blind people ‘see’

This robotic wheelchair has a laser sensor that generates a 3D map of its surroundings. The map allows the wheelchair to navigate through obstacles, such as people in a crowded corridor.

6. ‘Climbing’ wheelchair
More on robotic wheelchairs: this one has robotic legs that move to climb stairs, ditch obstacles and move through irregular terrain. Kind of like taking the Mars Rover and turning it into a wheelchair. This video gives us a demonstration of what the wheelchair can do.

7. Magnetic retainer to operate machinery
Georgia Tech has developed a retainer with magnetic sensors that translates tongue movements into joystick-like instructions for an app that controls machinery. This opens the working possibilities for people with high-level spinal injuries.

8. Voice recognition for elevators
An interface developed by Mitsubishi in Japan lets users use their voice to tell an elevator which floor they want to reach. The system activates when it detects a wheelchair and it also tells users when they have reached their floor.

Los códigos QR: Comparte información más rápido

El propósito de las URLs es facilitar a los seres humanos recordar una dirección web y acceder a ella escribiendo palabras que nos hagan sentido. Hoy tenemos una herramienta que nos permite saltarnos ese paso: los códigos QR.

QR significa Quick Response (respuesta rápida), un nombre apropiado ya los móviles nos permiten ahora ingresar a un sitio web tan sólo apuntando la cámara de nuestro dispositivo al código impreso.

Además nos pueden dirigir directamente a contenido multimedia, texto, descargas, llamadas telefónicas, mapas, Likes, recomendaciones o tweets en redes sociales y hasta redes Wi-Fi.
